Pink Shirt Day at City Council

This week, City Council fell on Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day started in 2007 as a way to highlight the issue of bullying in our schools, our homes, our workplaces and online, and to raise funds to support programs that foster healthy self-esteem in children.

In an act of solidarity, my colleagues at city council and I donned pink tops to show our support for this worthy endeavour.

To learn more about Pink Shirt Day, you can visit www.pinkshirtday.ca.

International Women’s Day

Next Sunday, March 8, is International Women’s Day. Since 1911, International Women’s Day has been a time to celebrate the achievements of women and girls and the advancement of women's rights. It is a time to reflect on the social, cultural and political victories that have been won, and to take action on the challenges that remain.

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, highlights the importance of taking meaningful steps to advance gender equality.

So join us in the recognition of International Women’s Day and in striving to make our city, country and world a more just place for women and girls.

Capital Ward Cup

We had a great time at the Capital Ward Cup, earlier this month. On February 14, teams representing Old Ottawa East, Old Ottawa South and the Glebe met up at Windsor Park for a friendly tournament to establish neighbourhood hockey supremacy for 2026.

Congratulations to the Old Ottawa East Hosers for their successful title defense!

New Pedestrian Crossover in the Glebe Annex

We are happy to announce that staff have agreed to implement a pedestrian crossover at the intersection of Bell Street and Henry Street. This will be a “Type B” crossover, featuring a painted crosswalk, flashing lights and overhead signage.

We would like to thank he advocacy from residents and the Glebe Annex Community Association for helping to make this happen

Brewer Pool Update

Maintenance work continues at the Brewer Pool, but staff have informed us that they are still on track for a March 2 re-opening. Currently, workers are filling and heating the pool now, and commissioning the new air handler is well underway.

Trivia Night for a Cause—The Glebe Centre

Trivia Night for a Cause is a community-based fundraising event bringing together teams of four for an evening of fun, friendly competition, and connection—all in support of seniors’ programs at the Glebe Centre.

While the Glebe Centre receives some government funding, their programs are not fully funded. They rely on the generosity of local businesses, volunteers and community fundraising events to continue delivering vital services that help older adults stay active, connected, and supported across the city.

About the Glebe Centre

The Glebe Centre is a trusted, not-for-profit organization that has supported older adults in Ottawa for over 50 years. Through its Community Programs, the Glebe Centre provides social, recreational, wellness, and support services that help seniors remain active, independent, and connected to their community. Our programs are designed to reduce social isolation, promote well-being, and ensure older adults of all incomes can age with dignity and purpose. Although, our community programs, do receive government funding, we are not funded 100 percent and we rely on fundraising, donorship and sponsors to meet our day to day operating needs.

Trivia for a Cause Tickets, Sun, Mar 22, 2026 at 2:00 PM | Eventbrite.

Seniors Sharing Stories

You are invited to attend a new hour-long play by, about, and performed with Ottawa seniors

A Circle Complete is the last in a trilogy of works produced by the company’s Seniors Sharing Stories project. The play asks universal questions: What happens when our parents are reaching end of life? How do we cope when powerful feelings of love, anger, denial and grief arise? How do we get through it with compassion, and even—dare we say it—a sense of humour and joy?

March 26 and March 27
2:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Rideau Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre (wheelchair accessible)
815 St. Laurent Boulevard
2nd Floor Drama Room

Parking is free, and the show is followed by a community talkback with the performers.

Tickets are pay-what-you-can (no one will be turned away for lack of funds). Learn more and reserve tickets at https://bptheatre.ca/new-play-highlights-challenges-and-joys-of-ottawa-seniors-2/.

11th Annual Bird Display with Safe Wings Ottawa

Safe Wings Ottawa is delighted to invite you to our 11th Annual Bird Display at the Canadian Museum of Nature on Thursday March 19 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Admission is free after 5:00pm!

The annual Bird Display is an opportunity to learn more about the impact of glass on the local bird populations in Ottawa-Gatineau. It is estimated that every year more than 250,000 birds fatally collide with glass in our city

Safe Wings Ottawa Annual Bird Display highlights the importance of preventing bird-glass collisions, Bird- Safe design standards, and the need for updated Migratory Bird Regulations specifically stating bird-window collision casualties are a contravention with the act.

Urgent Need for Volunteers to Support Families in Crisis—Ottawa Humane Society

The Ottawa Humane Society is urgently looking for 30 foster volunteers to support their Sheltering Animals From Emergencies (SAFE) program.

SAFE provides temporary boarding for pets whose families are navigating crisis like hospitalization, intimate partner violence and housing insecurity.

Right now, the Human Society is receiving more requests for SAFE than they have foster homes available, forcing them to turn some families away.

Volunteers can sign up on their website and they also have more information about accessing the SAFE program available.

Public Engagement is Now Open for the Rain Ready Ottawa Multi-Unit Residential Building (MURB) Rebate

We are seeking your input to help design a new pilot rebate stream for Rain Ready Ottawa. Rain Ready Ottawa is currently designing a new stream to help support more retrofit projects to help improve the health of Ottawa’s waterways and build climate resiliency.

Since launching in 2021, Rain Ready Ottawa has successfully led to the installation of hundreds of residential stormwater management projects like rain gardens, permeable pavement and soakaway pits and now we are hoping to help residents of larger residential complexes achieve the same results.

If you are a resident, board member, or property manager of a low-rise, multi-unit condominium, coop, rental, or affordable housing, we want to hear from you.

This is your opportunity to tell us how the City can best support you and your building’s community in becoming more ‘rain ready’ in the survey on the Rain Ready Ottawa Engage Page. Your responses will be considered as a part of the development of the new rebate that will be presented to Council in spring 2026.
