Carleton Ravens Men’s Basketball, Champions Again!

It was great to visit with the Carleton Ravens Men’s Basketball team at City Hall this month, as they were celebrated for the 2025-2026 U Sports championship. It’s the school’s 17th men’s basketball championship, the most in Canada!

Three-Stream Bins Coming to Springhurst Park and Sylvia Holden Park

As Chair of the Environment and Climate Change committee I have been pushing the city to expand its three-stream waste diversion program in parks. This summer, Springhurst Park and Sylvia Holden Park will be two of the 48 additional parks to receive three-stream bins across the city. Three new bins will be installed in Springhurst Park, and five new bins will be installed in Sylvia Holden Park, including one near each baseball diamond.

Three-stream bins allow residents to separate their waste between garbage, recycling and composting options and in previous years we added Windsor Park, Brewer Park and Brantwood Park.

In future years, we will look to continue expanding this program to more and more parks throughout Capital Ward such as Glebe Memorial, Central, Kaladar, Heron and Brown’s Inlet Parks.

Portable Bathrooms Program

This year, the city will be placing portable bathrooms in six parks in Capital Ward: Brantwood Park, Brewer Park, Glebe Memorial Park, Kaladar Park, Springhurst Park and Windsor Park.

We have also been able to ensure that the bathrooms in the new Heron Park Field House will be open all week:

  • Monday: 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Tuesday: 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Wednesday: 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Thursday: 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Friday: 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Saturday: 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm
  • Sunday: 12:00 pmo to 5:00 pm

This will complement the other public washrooms that will be open to the public this summer. For a full list, please check the city’s website.

Heron Park Community Building—Grand Opening Celebration & Barbecue

The new Heron Park Community Building is now open! My office has been pushing for the construction of this new facility in Heron Park since I was first elected in 2018 and have since helped secure the funding to complete it. The building was designed in collaboration with the community, and has lots of natural light, a kitchen, and a flexible community space.

Community members are invited to a BBQ celebration for the grand opening on Sunday May 31 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Building rentals can be booked by emailing [email protected].

Join us for free food and fun! All are welcome.

See You at the Great Glebe Garage Sale!

The Great Glebe Garage Sale will be happening on Saturday May 23, and we hope to see you there.

If you’re driving, please pay close attention to all parking signage. No-stopping zones are being implemented for the safety of pedestrians and to ensure emergency vehicles access.

And if you are coming down to the Garage Sale, stop by and say hi. Our team will have a table set up at the corner of Glebe Avenue and Lyon Street!

Ecology Ottawa at the Great Glebe Garage Sale

Ecology Ottawa will be attending the upcoming Great Glebe Garage Sale and hosting a tree giveaway, offering free native seedlings for residents to plant on their property. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in increasing the tree canopy in the Ottawa region and learning more about planting and caring for native trees.

Replenishing the urban tree canopy in the Ottawa region is vital as it addresses a range of important environmental and social issues, including mitigating climate change, providing habitat for wildlife, creating shade for residents, increasing happiness, and improving air, soil and water quality in the city. To learn more about our programs, visit www.ecologyottawa.ca.

Giveaway Weekend

The City of Ottawa is on a mission to reduce waste by encouraging repair and reuse—and to support that, we’re bringing back Giveaway Weekend!

Join the city-wide treasure hunt on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31.

Place your gently used, unwanted items at the curb with our multilingual free sign and let someone else give them a second life. Then, explore what your neighbours have put out because their trash may be your treasure!

Residents are asked to bring any uncollected items back inside at the end of the day. Items that are not taken can be donated to charitable organizations, shared through your local Buy Nothing Facebook group or posted on other free exchange websites. For ways to donate bulky items or textiles, and quick tips to reduce waste, visit: ottawa.ca/WasteReduction and select the option on the left to get more specific details.

Don’t miss Giveaway Weekend, Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31.

The City of Ottawa invites you to attend a public information session—open house to discuss the proposed infrastructure improvement project in your neighbourhood. Preliminary design drawings will be on display for your review and staff will be present to answer any questions and receive comments.

The project involves watermain and sewer replacement, road reconstruction, new sidewalks and the addition of traffic calming features. The objective of this project is to rehabilitate underground and roadway infrastructure that is nearing the end of its lifespan. Construction is planned to start spring 2027 (pending budget approval) and be completed by spring 2029.

Date and time:

Monday June 1, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
RA Centre, Courtside B

Safety Improvements Coming to First Avenue

With the province’s removal of the speed camera on First Avenue near Glebe Collegiate, concerns of safety near the school came up again. In response, staff have developed a plan to implement three sets of speed cushions on First Avenue: one on the approach to Percy Street, two between Percy and Chrysler Street, and a fourth just past Chrysler.

The project will be progressing through preliminary and detailed design phases over the next few months.

The proposed locations of the speed humps are approximate and may be adjusted slightly if impacts are identified during the detailed design stage. Other site-specific constraints if identified during detailed design may also affect the feasibility of the proposed measures.

The speed cushions will be channelized to better accommodate OC Transpo buses and bicyclists, while still slowing down cars.

Once we have received a timeline for installation, we will inform the community.

Raised Crosswalk Installation—Fifth Avenue and Ralph Street

On Saturday May 30, Fifth Avenue will be closed at Ralph Street to allow crews to install the new raised crosswalk on Fifth Avenue. This is being completed as part of the recent re-construction of Ella and Ralph Streets.

We are happy to have been able to get this necessary safety enhancement into the project. It will help calm traffic, and it will give a safe crossing for students going to school and people moving around our neighbourhood.

Traffic Management—Queen Elizabeth Drive and Pretoria Avenue

The National Capital Commission has launched its Weekend Bikedays for 2026. During the summer, Queen Elizabeth Drive between will be reserved for active transportation from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, between Fifth Avenue and Somerset Street.

With the upcoming re-construction of Pretoria Avenue, the detour will be a little different this year. When approaching from the Pretoria Bridge, traffic will either be diverted up Elgin Street, or along Pretoria to Metcalfe Street and northbound to Catherine Street.

We are having further discussions with city staff and the NCC about how best to manage traffic during Weekend Bikedays.

Windsor Park Pumping Station Project

Work on the Windsor Park Pumping Station continues. Hydro service reconnection is scheduled for May 25. Following reconnection, the bypass pumping system will be transitioned from generator power to Hydro service. This will eliminate the noise from the generators whenever pumping is required. One of the two large generators will be removed at that time, and the remaining unit will be maintained on site solely for contingency use in the event of a power outage.

The current construction schedule indicates that the majority of the remaining work—primarily equipment commissioning and minor civil works—is anticipated to be completed by the end of August. Following this, the site will be largely inactive until December 2026, when a wet well supply fan enclosure is scheduled for installation and commissioning. Final project completion will occur thereafter.

Bollards Replaced at Grande Allée Park

All four bollards at the entrances to Grand Allée Park have been replaced. The bollards are retractable to provide access to vendors and organizers of the Ottawa Farmers’ Market, while maintaining safety for pedestrians the rest of the time.

We’d like to thank the Public Works staff for their quick action on this.

Bridge-to-Bridge Plant Your Place!

Congratulations to the Bridge-to-Bridge Community Reforestation Project in Old Ottawa South for their incredible tree planting efforts!

On May 9, I joined community members as they planted seedlings in two areas near Bronson Avenue as part of the city’s Plant Your Place! program, beautifying our neighbourhood, contributing to tree canopy and planning for a resilient future.

Thanks to the residents who organized the planting, who came out to help, and to Forestry Department staff for their support!

You can learn more about the Plant Your Place! program at the city’s website.
